    Sample-to-Compliance

Carry drinking-water quality from a sampling plan through laboratory results to compliance: take and analyze the required samples, act fast when a result fails, and report to the regulator and customers. Where Outage-to-Restoration (VS-240) keeps water flowing after a main break, this proves the water is safe to drink.

    1. 01

      Plan the Sampling

      VS-390.10

Set the sites, parameters and frequencies the period requires, from the regulator's rules and the system's own risk assessment.

    2. 02

      Collect Samples

      VS-390.20

Take samples at treatment works, storage and customer taps, with field readings and a chain of custody to the laboratory.

    3. 03

      Analyze & Validate

      VS-390.30

Analyze the samples in an accredited or certified laboratory, check the results and flag any that exceed a standard.

    4. 04

      Respond to a Failure

      VS-390.40

Notify the regulator at once, take repeat samples, issue boil-water or do-not-drink advice when health is at risk, find and correct the cause in treatment or the network, and lift the advice when results are clear.

    5. 05

      Report Results

      VS-390.50

Submit the period's results and any incident reports to the regulator, and publish the water quality information customers are owed, such as the annual Consumer Confidence Report in the US or supply-zone results in the UK and EU.

    6. 06

      Review & Improve

      VS-390.60

Review trends, failures and complaints, and update the safety plan, the sampling plan and treatment targets.
